Q

What inspired you to start your blog?
What obstacles did you face in the beginning?

A

I really have been blogging since I was in college (2006-2007), on LiveJournal. It was very casual. Then I picked it back up when my husband at the time deployed and I had to find something to do besides raise 2 boys. Then it became a regular hobby as I documented being an army wife and being a mother for the third time. I really got serious about it at the beginning of 2014. That is when I decided to use my name as my brand.

Q

How did you come up with your blog name?
What’s the meaning behind it?

A

I used my name as my blog name because not alot of people have the name Rekita. It is a unique names ,a mashup with my mother and father’s name. My husband (at the time, remind me not to pay him, lol) suggested that I should use my own name as my brand. And there you have it!

Q

What is your daily blogging routine and how do you stay productive?
How many hours a week do you spend on your blog?

A

I don’t really have a blogging routine, my routine mostly consists of designing for my clients. But if I run into a question that my client has or that I can’t figure out and then I solve it, I tend to write about to share with my readers. I don’t spend too much time on my blog, I do research ideas and write them down of course, but I don’t spend more than an hour a day.

Q

Are you the only one who works on your blog or do you have help?
If yes, how long were you working alone before you brought on help?

A

I work alone on my blog, however, I do not mind guest posts!

Q

Was there a blog or blogger you looked up to when starting out?
How did they inspire you and your blog/brand?

A

I look up to DesignLoveFest. The author is such my style, she also helped me discover Shop Bando, which inspired my brand. I love all of their products because it is sol colorful, vibrant, and fun. I was like, WOW, that is me!

Q

Are there any blogs you read regularly?
Why do you like them?

A

I am sort of random when it comes to blog reading. But I love ByRegina, she is so authentic. She shares and gives so much. I have basically printed out every workbook she has and put it in a nice binder, lol!

Q

What do you wish someone had told you on your first day of blogging?
What advice would you give someone else on their first day?

A

Do NOT worry about followers and don’t give into the “GIveaways” hype. When I started Rekita Nicole, I vowed to never do a giveaway. I wanted all my readers to be loyal readers. So my advice is that it is okay to 5 loyal readers. Those leaders will buy your stuff. Not thousands of people who just came to your site because they wanted something for free.

Q

If you had $1000 to start from scratch today what would you spend the money on?
What have you spent money on that wasn’t worth the investment?

A

What’s the one thing you’ve done that has increased your traffic the most?
What have you wasted time on with the least reward?

A

Pinterest has increased my traffic exponentially! Like, whoah!!!!!!! So I spend alot of time using pinterest. I would say Instagram is the next contender. Periscope would be after that. I wasted time on stuff like giveaways in the past.

Q

When did you realize your blog was a success?
What was the turning point?

A

When “big bloggers” started pinning and retweeting my stuff, and some of my posts went viral! Also, a clients of mine was speaking to a complete stranger about her blog designs, and then the stranger knew who I was! Like really, I am famous!!!! lol!!!

I’d like to thank Rekita for taking the time to participate in Behind the Blog. Don’t forget to check out her blog Rekita Nicole and consider taking her course That Blog Life if you’d like to learn more about creating mock-ups and templates in photoshop! And try not to get too caught up in her gorgeous Pinterest feed! Bye for now!

What other questions would you like to see posed on Behind the Blog. I’m always open for suggestion!

  • Emily Scott

I love what Rekita says about loyal readers and authenticity. That’s what I want from my brand as well. I want my audience to become my community. I want it to be real.

    • Yes, I totally agree Emily, that’s what I’m hoping for too! Such an amazing and genuine goal to strive for!
